Highs and lows

By on Jul 26, 2016 in Blog | 2 comments

It would probably be correct to say that I reached the high point of this journey the day before yesterday. From here onwards it goes down; the paths through Slovenia and Croatia follow lower ground. The high point also was a real high point in this journey, though you have to be careful in saying that. Because if this is the high, then it is litterally going downward from here. And what would be the point in going on then? Actually there is only the experience of walking, as Antonio Machado tells us in one of his wonderful poems.

“Wanderer, your footsteps are the road, and nothing more; wanderer, there is no road, the road is made by walking. By walking one makes the road, and upon glancing behind one sees the path that never will be trod again. Wanderer, there is no road– Only wakes upon the sea”.

Why would you walk at all then?, one might ask. Because of the pleasure, for joy, for the physical challenge. ..for a thousand reasons that add to life.

Someone once said that if you have to chose between different things, between left or right; your choice should be dedicated to that which contains the most of life.

  1. I always enjoy reading your reflections on your walking. I wish you good health, peace and happiness throughout your current trip and look forward to reading your latest observations.
Take care, Wim. Set your wishful sights on the horizon, of course, but always remember to listen carefully to your own footfall. All is well in Scotland.

    • It”s good to hear that all is well in Scotland, after what the Brits have pulled on you. Independence is getting closer!
Hope that all is well with also. Hope to meet in autumn!
