When I look at the photo of Passau, I see at least 7 churches. The church with its bell tower is an unmistakable attribute to the landscape, next to being the infallible guide to the nearest bakery and gasthof with the ‘gutbürgerliche küche’. They are always next to the church.
A landscape without churches is almost unimaginable to me. It would seem inhospitable and barren, without direction or orientation. It’s an image that has been impregnated since earliest childhood, even apart from any religious meaning. How many more of these images define our thoughts and feelings?
