Often when I get close to a minaret (it happens a lot, the path seeks every minaret it can find), and one of the praying moments is announced, I always first hear a couple of bleeps coming out of the megaphones. You know, those bleeps that older telephones make when speeddialling. After the bleep comes the voice of the imam. I imagine him sitting there behind a huge switchboard to connect all the minarets and saying the prayers into a microphone. When he’s done he switches off, with another series of bleeps. It isn’t strange, look at all the radio and television priests performing, but somehow this image of the imam in front of the switch board makes me smile so much. I don’t know why and how but it brightens my day. 🙂
